Apple Music on a USB drive for your car

Not every car has CarPlay, and on many stereos a USB drive is the only way to play your own music. Songs downloaded in the Music app can't simply be copied, though. Here's how to prepare files your car stereo will read.

1. Save the songs as MP3

Car stereos most reliably support MP3. Newer ones often read AAC and some read FLAC — but if you're not sure, choose MP3.

  1. Get Music File Lab and create a free account (3 songs free, no card).
  2. Connect Apple Music with the button in the top‑right corner.
  3. Copy a link to an album or playlist (“Share → Copy Link”), paste it and choose MP3.
  4. In Settings turn on album folders or playlist folders — it makes music easier to find on the stereo.

2. Format the USB drive on your Mac

Most stereos need the FAT32 file system (called “MS-DOS (FAT)” in Disk Utility). Some newer ones also read exFAT. A stereo won't read “APFS” or “Mac OS Extended”.

  1. Open Disk Utility and select the USB drive on the left.
  2. Click Erase, choose MS-DOS (FAT) as the format and Master Boot Record as the scheme.
  3. Click Erase. Note: this deletes everything on the drive.

3. Copy the folders and eject

Drag your music folders onto the drive. Before unplugging, click the eject icon in Finder — otherwise files may not finish writing.

macOS adds hidden files starting with ._. Most stereos ignore them, but some show them as “broken tracks”. If that happens, run dot_clean /Volumes/YOUR_DRIVE_NAME in Terminal.

If the stereo doesn't see the files

  • Check the manual for the maximum drive size — older stereos only read up to 32 GB.
  • Don't nest folders too deep — album or playlist folders are enough.
  • Some stereos limit files per folder (e.g. 255) — split large playlists.
  • Slow‑loading artwork is normal on older stereos — the music still plays.

What you can use the files for

Downloaded files are for your private listening. Don't share or publish them. Use the app in line with the law in your country and Apple Music's terms.
